St.Michael’s High School, Outaouais

St. Michael’s High School is located in the municipality of Low in the Outaouais region of Western Québec. The region is situated along the Gatineau river, and is home to the Paugan Hydro electric dams. Low was named after the English-speaker, Charles Adamson Low, a lumber baron. The school is highly community focused and even runs their own non-profit organisation, the St. Michael’s High School Foundation.

Y4Y Field Trip & Activity

Historian and author, Rick Henderson, presents his own family history from the Outaouais region. He tells the story of his ancestor, Philemon Wright, a pioneer of the first settlement in Canada’s National Capital area that resulted in the region’s development. We were so glad to have a live example of the importance of learning about your own regional history!
A special thank you to the Regional Association of West Quebecers (RAWQ) for helping coordinate this special event.

One of Wakefield’s oldest dwellings, the Fairbairn House, recounts the history of the region’s first grist mill. Students received a special tour from the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre’s founder. The students had the opportunity to learn about the Fairbairn family, and Wakefield’s English-speaking settlers.

Special thank you to Maura de Freitas from the Martindale Pioneer Cemetery and the Fairbairn House Heritage Centre.
